WHY IT MATTERS
Personal AI agents that work in the background are now the main battleground in consumer AI. With Claude Duet, xAI, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic all have one on the market.
What Anthropic announced
On October 21, Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent. Instead of waiting for a prompt, Duet watches your connected apps and brings you what needs attention.
It’s a standalone app for iPhone, Android, and the web. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5.
How it works
- Morning brief: one short summary each day, with action items from your connected apps.
- Background checks: it looks through your connected accounts every few hours.
- Cloud tasks: assignments keep running on a cloud virtual machine, even when the app is closed.
- Connectors: more than 6,000 app integrations at launch.
- Shopping: checkout through Stripe’s Link and Shop Pay.
Duet asks for approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes a file. Reports also say it doesn’t see your passwords when you give it access to an account.
Who can get it
Duet is limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, through a waitlist. Anthropic says it will email people when access is ready, but it hasn’t said how fast the line will move.
Team and Enterprise plans are expected later. There’s no announced timeline for free users or other countries.
What it costs
During the preview, Duet is included with Claude Pro ($20 a month) and Max. It shares the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Background checks count against those limits, and complex assignments use more.
Anthropic hasn’t announced pricing for after the preview.
How it compares
Duet is the fourth major personal agent to launch since August.
| Agent | Company | Launched (2026) | Entry price | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Duet | Anthropic | Oct 21 | $20/month (Claude Pro) | US only, waitlist |
| Dots | OpenAI | Sep 29 | $100/month (Pro) | Rolling out; not in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland |
| Muse | Meta | Sep 8 | Free tier | US only |
| Grok Bot | xAI | Aug 11 | Bundled with SuperGrok | Beta |
Two differences stand out. Dots conversations don’t count against ChatGPT usage limits, while Duet’s background work does count against Claude’s. And Dots lets you watch its browser as it works, which Duet can’t do yet.
My take
Anthropic was last to ship, and it’s leaning on caution. Duet asks before every consequential action, and the company openly warns that it “might misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent.”
I’m on the waitlist. Once I’m in, I’ll test whether that caution makes Duet more useful, or just slower.
